Chapel Studios started life as a plain and simple rent-a-desk operation in a nice, fully equipped open plan studio office space. It has strong credentials as a creative space, having previously been home to the well-regarded international photographer Zul.
After a year in business running on a very simple rent-a-desk premise (http://www.deskspacehove.com) and careful selection of community members (sorry, but telesales businesses cannot be accomodated at Chapel Studios, check out our available Office Suites over on http://www.officespacessussex.com ), we have established a strong, largely media-oriented community working in design (for print & web), web design and build (in house Coldfusion gurus, fair bit of PHP going on and also widget development, it's a good place for coders :), a celebrity press agency, medical marketing research company and various independent (through the line, integrated and digital) marketing & advertising professionals.
We're keen to expand our community and firmly subscribe to the Wired Sussex and Creative Brighton ethos of preventing the huge brain drain of creative industries talent commuting to London daily (according to Brighton & Hove City Council, over half of the city's economically active population leave the city everyday to earn a living).
After a year with our current community, I've decided to develop Chapel Studios as a Co-Working studio space. James McCarthy has done a good job of bringing the co-working ethos to Brighton over at The Werks. I haven't yet visited, but it sounds great.
Our facility offers a more intimate, team/family/community-oriented atmosphere in a light and airy desk-based studio environment with kitchen, meeting area and small chillout area. For a monthly licence fee from only £250 inclusive of everything (quality desk and high-back chair, lockable under-desk cabinet, reliable, fast (8Mb) broadband - wired and secure wireless, phone connection point, tea selection, water cooler, amazing coffee machine and a selection of sweets and savoury snacks, weekly cleaning and security systems), I believe (and hope that the guys and girls already here alongside me agree!) that there is no good reason not to come and check out Chapel Studios - free taster sessions are available anytime - just let us know that you'll be coming in, we will also be posting open co-working sessions shortly. We're saving up for an Open Beer too.
Co-Working is a movement with a simple philosophy - start with a shared office and add cafe culture. So...the idea of Chapel Studios is to take the best elements of a coffee shop (social, energetic, creative) and the best elements of a workspace (productive, functional) and combine them to give independent workers the chance to have their own, affordable space. A good video overview from the guys that came up with co-working over on the US East Coast is available here. The Chapel Studios take on Co-Working and Incidental Collaboration is here.
I don't view co-working as remotely mandatory to join the Chapel Studios community or simply rent a desk and run your business from here. I'm much keener on Incidental Collaboration which I've seen here at the studio over the past year. Everyone has collaborated with everyone else on a project, some large, some small, but all with good results. Our community is incredibly inclusive too - new occupants say they feel right at home normally by the end of the first day and certainly for the end of week social at one of the many bars around these parts.
I would like to welcome you to come and check out our space. We're at the bottom of Waterloo Street on the Brighton & Hove border, 200 metres from the seafront at 2 Chapel Mews, map here.
